Basilian monastery

Description

  • The Basilian Holy Mother of God Monastery was founded in 1765 by Count Franciszek Potocki.
  • The monastery became a significant religious and cultural-educational center of Uman city of the 18-th-19-th centuries.

During 1765-1832 years there was a school within the monastery walls, the number of pupils of which reached 800 people.

In 1767-1768 the great-grandfather of the Ukrainian writer Maksym Rylskyi Romuald studied at the Basilian School.
At the beginning of the 20-th century, pupils of the school Józef Zaleski, Severin Goszczynski and Michał Grabowski organized a literary circle “Za-Go-Gr”, which gave rise to the so-called “Ukrainian school” in Polish literature.
The construction of the stone building of the monastery began after the Cossack-peasant national liberation uprising on the Right Bank of Ukraine in 1768-1769. The construction of the monastery was completed in 1790. The monastery school worked until 1832, the monastery - until 1834.
Soon a military hospital was located in the building of the former monastery. After the liquidation of military settlements (January 1858), the building remained in the military department. The premises were converted into barracks, and an artillery unit was stationed here.

HISTORY

In 1879 the building together with the land plot (up to 3 dessiatinas) was transferred to the Ministry of Justice. On July 29, 1880 the District court was opened in Uman.

In this building from 1918 to 1920 there were Soviet institutions of various spheres. It is no coincidence that in those years this ancient building was called “Uman Smolny”.

In the autumn of 1920, the newly created Proletarian Theater was located here, where performances of the Kyiv Mobile Drama Theater “Kyidramte”, created by the innovator director Les Kurbas, took place. At the same time, on the initiative of the director and under his leadership, a drama studio was opened, which included Uman enthusiasts of theatrical art. Mykola Bazhan took an active part in this studio.

In the early 1920s, trade union committees were located on the premises of the former monastery, then called the “House of Unions”.
After the war in 1949, the Uman branch of the Kyiv Training Complex of the Accounting Training operated. Until 1998, the territory belonged to the military men.
On February 1, 2006, the “Old Uman” State Historical and Architectural Reserve was opened, to which the premises of the former Basilian Monastery were transferred.
In 2016, the tourist route “By mysterious dungeons of the Basilian Monastery” was opened, which is especially popular among visitors. A monk tells the story of one of the oldest buildings in Uman.
