The story began no longer with the building, but from the street. In Mariupol there is one descent that leads directly to the sea. It is located in the place where two streets intersect - Zemskaya and Italian. And whichever of these streets you walk, you will run into a descent that will inevitably lead you to the sea. Initially, he did not look very noticeable. The city authorities did not pay much attention to its improvement. There were no trees on it at all, as well as sidewalks. Instead of sidewalks just lay stone slabs of different sizes, walking on which was probably problematic. Local residents were already forced by their own efforts to repair a broken road. In the second half of the century, the descent had already begun to grow green and build houses. One of which gave him the name - Gampersky (or Doctor).
The very house in question is the House of Hamper. The building itself has already been given the name of one of its residents, known in the city, - Dr. Sergey Fedorovich Gamper.
Building
From the very beginning it was a two-storey mansion with an area of 8 x 8 m. Later, a third floor was added, a part of the outbuilding and a large room inside were added. Just in which the well-known doctor and took patients. In the 80s, an addition with a peaked roof was added to the building, which made it close to the Gothic architecture. In addition to the already existing no less “Gothic” tower, crowning the second floor and gathering the pointed composition of the mansion into a knot. Also on its territory was a vast courtyard with a garden and a huge fence. And although the fence and limited the house from unwanted guests, but from the maritime atmosphere of the city he could not protect. In the middle of the courtyard was a pool in which swans swam. And to the main entrance led a path sprinkled with fresh sea sand. And a wide staircase from which you could get to the second floor directly from the courtyard.
Owner question
Who was the owner of this mansion is not completely known. It so happened that during the Great Patriotic War, the archives of the Mariupol inventory bureau were gone. Therefore, the exact facts on the subject to whom and when this building belonged, you will not find. Did that sound a couple of names of potential owners: a certain merchant Shneiderovich and Isay Matetsky. But how true this is is not clear.
House residents
Dr. Gamper was far from the only person who lived in this house. At the time of the NEP, one man was noticed in it, trying to start making sausages. The name of the resident is unknown, but traces of his presence have remained until now: hooks for hanging pig and beef carcasses are still stored in one of the basements. And later the house became communal property and it was already occupied by several families.
Reconstruction
4 years after the end of the war, the building began to be reconstructed. The rooms, which used to be spacious, divided the partitions into smaller ones. Some windows were laid with bricks, for the appearance of new ones - the openings were punched. Changes in the planning have led to the fact that now it’s not just a few families that fit in, but about forty tenants. That filled all the rooms, including the attic.
True, except to increase the number of areas for new residents, the reconstruction did little to help the building. Currently, there are directly types of signs of destruction, neglect and lack of household amenities.
This, of course, is not the best final for such a beautiful and mysterious building. But, let's hope, they will pay attention to it and put it in order.
