Oak of Maksym Zalizniak is one of the oldest trees of Ukraine, the natural monument of local importance, it is in top ten largest and the oldest trees in Europe. It is the winner of the All-Ukrainian competition ,,National Tree of Ukraine” (in the nomination ,,Memorial Tree of Ukraine”) - the 1st place, in the nomination ,,The most powerful tree of Ukraine” - the 3rd place. Oak of Maksym Zalizniak is also part of the group of ,,Sacred Trees of Ukraine” as a witness to the Buda tragedy of June 18, 1943.

This is a unique millennial oak, named after the Hetman of Ukraine Maksym Zalizniak - the leader of the national liberation uprising Koliyivshchyna. After the suppression of the uprising, the authorities and the church tried to eliminate the memory of Maksym Zalizniak and the Haidamakys. Local residents in order to immortalize their glorious countryman, named in his honor one of the most powerful trees of Kholodnyi Yar.
After one of the visits to Kholodnyi Yar, the famous artist Danylo Narbut created a monumental canvas ,,And blew a new fire from Kholodnyi Yar”. On a stout oak branch, he painted images of all the creators of Ukraine-Russia from the Old Kyiv period up to the present.
Since 1972 the oak as a botanical relic has the status of a state monument of local significance and since 1995 Chyhyryn National Historical and Cultural Reserve has been taken care of the natural monument. Since 2010 the oak is one of the 17 National Trees of Ukraine.
Like a brave warrior has scars on his body, so the Oak has traces of thunder on its stem. According to the research studies of the structure of timber by experts, the stem of the tree was struck by lightning six times, but it had survived and now it is the hallmark of Kholodnyi Yar.
