  • The territorial and spiritual center of Ukraine – Cherkasy region – united the villages of Moryntsi, Shevchenkove, Budyshche, Vilshany into National reserve “The Motherland of Taras Shevchenko”.
  • The childhood of the Kobzar of the Ukrainian people, Taras Shevchenko, was in these Middle Dnieper villages with a glorious history and powerful spiritual potential.

In Moryntsi he said his first word, in Kerelivka he grew, formed as an individual, in Budyshche - in Engelhardt’s estate - he became a Cossack, and in Vilshany he took the first step towards recognition, towards world fame.

The history of the reserve begins with the history of the estate in Kerelivka, where our poet spent his childhood. Fate led Taras in difficult and steep ways from the threshold of his parent’s house to Budyshche, Vilno, St. Petersburg, Kazakhstan, to the world recognition. But he never forgot who he was, he did not shy away from the language, "that the mother sang, how she swaddled the baby, talked to the baby ...". He returned to his native Kerelivka three times to walk the paths of his childhood, to bow his head before his parents’ graves, to meet his brothers and sisters. Above all, he dreamed to live in Ukraine, but he couldn’t…

HISTORY

  • After Shevchenko's death, people went to Kerelivka, to the ancestral estate of the Prophet of the Ukrainian people.
  • In a small copybook, the first Book of Impressions, they wrote down their feelings of spiritual uplift, the energy of these places.

In 1935 the construction of the museum began. In 1939, on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Kobzar’s birth, a literary memorial museum was opened.

In 1992 the Taras Shevchenko Literary Memorial Museum became a part of the newly created State Historical and Cultural Reserve “The Motherland of Taras Shevchenko”, which united the villages of Kobzar’s childhood. There are 40 objects and monuments of cultural heritage of Ukraine on the territory of the reserve.
The reserve is a spiritual substance of Ukrainians and fans of Ukrainian heritage. Everything on this land is special, charming and unique. Whoever touches its beauty for the first time will immediately feel the awe of the life-giving power, its mystery and purity.
