From the moment of its foundation until 1925, this square was called the Equestrian Square, and until 2016 it was called the “Vosstaniya Square”. It is located at the intersection of three administrative districts of the city - Slobodsky, Moscow and Osnoviansky.

To the “Horse Market” ground stop near the square, route taxis 11e, 211e, 214e, 231e, 244e, 260e, tram lines 8, 27 ply the square. The square is located near the metro station with the same name “Square of Defenders of Ukraine”.
From historical sources it is known that already at the beginning of the nineteenth century, fairs specializing in the sale of horses were located at this place. That is how the first name of the square appeared. In addition, the racetrack was located at this place.
Later there was a match factory and an agricultural machinery factory. In 1975 the square was reconstructed, a new bus station was erected on it. To this day, the market under the name “Horse market” continues to function.
