One of the constituent parts of the National Pirogov’s Estate Museum is his mausoleum – the church-necropolis. The embalmed body of the scientist has been resting here since 1882.
Aleksandra Pirogova, widow of the world-famous surgeon, was buried there later, according to her will, and at a later date – the elder son of N.Pirogov.
During holidays and special days to honor the memory of the famous doctor there is church service, the bells ring and you can hear various musical works. But every day the doors of the church complex are open for those who appreciate contribution of N.Pirogov into the development of the world science and medicine and respect for personality.
“To be a human – that is where the upbringing should lead to” – the prominent surgeon used to live and act under this principle and he remained faithful to it till the last breath.
Pirogov opened a new epoch in the operative surgery: he performed thousands of operations and necropsies; he was the first in the country to use ether anesthesia; he introduced plaster cast for setting broken bones; he was the first to show the necessity of the triage; he used an artificial joint to extend a short-cut limb, etc.
Besides, Nikolai Pirogov grew flowers, wrote poems and philosophic tractates.

Nikolai Pirogov died in 1881. On November 23 the body of the scientist was embalmed by Dmitriy Vyvodtsev, a doctor from Petersburg. The family vault was built at the cemetery by request of the widow of N.Pirogov with the purpose to preserve the body. On January 24, 1882 the body of N.Pirogov was delivered there from the village church.
In 1885, under the project of V.Sychugov, architect, a temple was built over the family vault instead of the temporary chapel and it was sanctified in honor of St. Nicholas, one of the most revered saints.
After the widow had died, the sanctuary was abandoned. The burial of N. Pirogov has even been robbed (a sword and a cross have been stolen).
Re-embalming, performed in May 1945, saved the body of the genuine doctor. Later on this treatment was performed regularly; the last one was in 2018.
In 1980-1985 there were some repair-restoration works of the church structure and in 1992-1997 the interior reconstruction took place: monumental painting, the icon-stand and others have been restored.
