  • In 1885, a temple was erected in place of the temporary chapel above the tomb, designed by architect V. Sichugov, and consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Nikolai Pirogov died in 1881. On November 23 the body of the scientist was embalmed by Dmitriy Vyvodtsev, a doctor from Petersburg. The family vault was built at the cemetery by request of the widow of N.Pirogov with the purpose to preserve the body. On January 24, 1882 the body of N.Pirogov was delivered there from the village church.

In 1885, under the project of V.Sychugov, architect, a temple was built over the family vault instead of the temporary chapel and it was sanctified in honor of St. Nicholas, one of the most revered saints.

After the widow had died, the sanctuary was abandoned. The burial of N. Pirogov has even been robbed (a sword and a cross have been stolen).

Re-embalming, performed in May 1945, saved the body of the genuine doctor. Later on this treatment was performed regularly; the last one was in 2018.

In 1980-1985 there were some repair-restoration works of the church structure and in 1992-1997 the interior reconstruction took place: monumental painting, the icon-stand and others have been restored.
