In the 17th century at the foot of Zamkova hora there was the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. The temple was destroyed in 1678 during the Second Chyhyryn campaign, when the city was captured by the Turkish troops. During archaeological excavations in 1989-1994 and 2004-2006 there were investigated the remains of three walls with foundations. Remains of frescoes, a large number of pieces of burnt wood, fragments of icons were also found.

The church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is associated with the name of a prominent Ukrainian church and political figure Yosyp Neliubovych-Tukalskyi, who was a supporter of the independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, a friend and adviser to the Hetman Petro Doroshenko. Nelyubovych-Tukalsky died in 1675 and was buried in the Church of Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. In 1678, when Chyhyryn was under siege by the Turkish troops, the relics of the Metropolitan were transferred to the Lubny Mgar Monastery.
The new church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was built next to the authentic ruins and of the size it had in the 17th century. The church was consecrated on July 12, 2007 and is now open for the church-goers. In August 2007 close to the church the monument to Yosyp Neliubovych-Tukalskyi was installed. The authentic ruins of the church are an archeological monument of the 17th century.
