HISTORY

  • Originally the house was intended for employees of the Kharkov turbine factory, construction of which began in 1950
  • House with a spire project developed by the architect PI Areshkin in the typical for the time of Soviet monumental classicism

The history of the construction of interest as well as the building itself. Gosprom Construction started back in 1925. May 5, was declared the All-Union competition, in which among the 19 projects was selected the best.

Working with the interesting title "The Uninvited Guest" of the great trio of architects - S. Serafimov, S. Kravets and M. Felger quickly won the judges' disposition and was approved. Construction began with the help of human and horsepower, primitive tools were used: shovels, wheelbarrows, stretchers. Three years later, all the work was finished. Only to the completion of construction it was possible to mechanize the process. In the State Industry there were 22 republican trusts, 10 commissariats, as well as the board of the Industrial Bank and many other organizations, not to mention the meeting rooms and the technical library. During the German occupation of 1941-1943, on the first floor, a stable was equipped. On the upper floors there lived monkeys who had run away from the zoo, who had survived the war safely. In 1943, when the Germans left Kharkov, the building was mined. The explosion was miraculously prevented by an unknown patriot who died during the demining. Then the building was set on fire, but this did not do harm to the reinforced concrete skeleton of Gosprom. In 1944-1947, a post-war reconstruction was carried out. In 2004 an international scientific and practical conference "Constructivism in Ukraine" was held in Kharkov. By the 350th anniversary of Kharkov, the reconstruction of the Gosprom was started, calculated until 2010.
