Zaporizhzhia

Zaporizhzhia children's railway

Description

  • The longest children's railway in Ukraine was opened in 1972, where young railway workers study nature and look for ways to solve environmental problems. It has a length of 9.4 km and consists of: 1 station, 7 intermediate platforms, a wagon depot, eco-facilities - zoo, aquarium, arboretum and winter garden.

The Zaporizhzhya Children's Railway is the longest in Ukraine. The total length of tracks is 9.4 km. There are three locomotives operating on the children's railway (Tu2-136, Tu2-144, Tu7a-3108), 6 PV40 wagons and a loading platform. The only children's railway in Ukraine where trains run in winter.

The Zaporizhzhya Children's Railway is a kind of center of formation of ecological culture of young railway workers, which combines educational and research work.
The organization of train movement was carried out by means of telephone communication, later the electro-gland system began to be used. At the final stop, the locomotive was turned on special arrows and became in the head of the train. In the design of the second stage - the line was closed, and the terminal station "Zhovtneva" remained deadlocked. In the process of further design, a rather interesting solution was found: two tracks were laid in parallel at the Zhovtneva station, one and a half kilometers long, one led to the circle and the other to the reverse. Although this section cannot be fully called a two-lane (in fact, these are two independent approaches to the Zhovtneva station, and the illusion of a two-lane main railway is visually created).
On the territory of the children's railway the vegetation is constantly renewed, the species composition of the flora of the arboretum is enriched, which improves the ecological state of the environment and promotes the expansion of the park area for family holidays of Zaporozhye and city guests.
Children's railway facilities operate daily: zoo; aquarium hall; railway modeling exhibition hall; winter Garden.

HISTORY

  • The idea of creating a children's railway was born in July 1971.

The inauguration of the first stage of the Zaporizhzhya Children's Railway was held on May 19, 1972, at which point 3.46 km of track was laid on sand ballast, three stations were arranged.

In 1974, the children's railway received another TU2 locomotive, five Pafawag wagons and two cargo platforms.
In 1975 a grand opening of the second stage of the railway took place, and in September 1976 a zoo corner was opened at Zhovtneva station, which later turned into a real zoo (until now it is the only zoo in the city of Zaporizhzhya).
In 1983-1984 there was a significant re-equipment of the children's railway. All Pafawag wagons were decommissioned and instead the railway received 6 PV-51 wagons, which are used to date.
In the summer of 1984, a four-storey educational and laboratory complex was commissioned at the Zhovtneva station. It has rooms for working circles.
In 1990, an artificial hill was laid over the line of the children's railway in the direction of the connection of the Coastal highway with the neighboring residential district, in which a 80 m long tunnel was laid.
In 2004, due to the malfunctioning of the track circle and the need for large financial investments in their inspection and repair, the railroad management was forced to abandon the use of semi-automatic blocking on the race.
