Former theater "Illusion"

Description

  • The building was built in the late nineteenth century. designed by local architect Jacob Pauchenko. The building has a unique synthesis of Art Nouveau style with elements of neo-baroque, neo-rococo and Byzantine styles.

It looks like a carved wooden tower, but built with bricks. Strict forms of the antikizizovaya facade are continued in the restrained design of the lobby of the main staircase (meander ornament of metal railings, stylized Dorian motifs in the decoration of the columns), but the interior of most rooms is dominated by a combination of different styles.

Next to the oval lobby of the second floor, the main decoration of which is stucco sculptures-putti (neococo style), there is an enfilade, in the decoration of which the motifs of neo-baroque, neococo, oriental style were combined. In some rooms, tiled stoves in neoclassical and neobarokovyh forms were preserved.
The facade differs from other street buildings in the plasticity of framed window openings.
In the rectangles between the windows and the first floor door in the corners you can see rings - a kind of holders for the theater’s advertising posters of the time.
