The square has existed since the construction of the oldest fire station in the city in 1845 (architect A. Alferov). The project of the memorial complex located in the park was proposed by the architect Yu. N. Shkodovsky, it was implemented in 1990 by the famous Kharkov sculptor M.F. Ovsyankin.

The opening of the reconstructed square took place on August 14, 2015. Commemorative plaques with the names of 12 firefighters who died during their duties in 1990 were installed on both sides of the monument. During the grand opening, the memorial complex was consecrated. The square connects Poltava Shlyakh and Blagoveshchenskaya streets (formerly Karl Marx).
