Monument soccer ball

That is why, before the 1980 Olympics, the authorities placed the emblem of the future Olympic Games here. Over time, the venue for football fans has lost its significance. But the management of the Metallist football club decided to resume the site and allocated funds for its arrangement and design of the monument to the ball. The idea of the project belongs to Svetlana Dudenko, the main artist of Kharkov. The architectural solution was made by Vladimir Tishevsky, the sculpture was made by Oleg Shevchuk. Oleg Popov was appointed curator of the project for the technical part. The monument was unveiled on August 24, 2001, to celebrate City Day and the 10th anniversary of Independence. The opening ceremony was attended by the leaders of the city and the region, famous athletes, including Oleg Blokhin, the most prolific scorer of Soviet football and the coach of the Ukrainian team. Before the arrival of the commission for the Euro 2012 match in Kharkov, the granite part of the monument was significantly damaged by unknown people, recaptured from the monument pieces were dragged away. The city authorities managed to complete the reconstruction in record time, which was completed just a few hours before the visit of UEFA Executive Director David Taylor, who was able to contemplate the monument in an updated form. Kharkiv residents believe that it was precisely the reaction rate for the renewal of the city’s sporting symbol that recommended Kharkov to the European football official as a city that is ready for any unexpected situations, which means that it will host a football match.
