The history of the garden
This one of the oldest gardens in the city was laid in 1804-1806 as the University Garden. It occupies a large territory between Freedom Square and the main street of the city - Sumskaya Street. On its territory there are about 15 thousand trees, of which 20 centuries-old oaks, whose age exceeds 200 and even 300 years, are protected by the Law.
What else to see
On the alleys of the garden are a fountain, a monument to T. G. Shevchenko (sculptor M. Manizer and architect I. Langbard), a monument to Archangel Michael, a memorial to the Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine and a memorial to repressed kobzars, bandurists and lyrers. There are also cultural institutions on the territory of the garden - the Concert Hall Ukraine, the Kharkov Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after N. Lysenko, the Palace of Children and Youth Creativity. One of the alleys is called the Alley of Sports Glory, on it is a figure of a soccer ball. The exit from Shevchenko Garden to Klochkovskaya Street was marked by the Cascade, which some time ago became musical, and therefore even more attractive for tourists.
What is happening now
Reconstructions are carried out every few years in the Garden, the last was carried out in 2015, when the central fountain, located at the end of the central alley behind the monument to T.G.Shevchenko, was renovated.
Sergey Chechelnitsky, the chief architect of Kharkov, announced the results of the hearings on the reconstruction of the garden. It is planned that by 2020 it will be planted with new trees, bushes, lawns and flowerbeds, reconstructing the bridge to the Zoo, replacing the track lining, installing new lighting, urns, toilets and conducting a new water-supply network for irrigation.
