The Independence Monument of Ukraine was erected and inaugurated in honor of the 10th anniversary of Independence - August 24, 2001. But in July 2012, the monument was demolished by decision of the city authorities.
The authors of the new monument were Alexander Ridny and Anna Ivanova. It was opened on August 22, 2012, the day before the celebration of City Day and the 21st anniversary of Independence. The then president, Viktor Yanukovych, attended the grand opening. The memorial sign is a pedestal with a ball, on which is located the figure of the ancient Greek goddess of victory, Nika, holding a crown in her hands. At the same time, it symbolizes a free country - Ukraine. The size of the bronze sculpture of a woman is 6 meters, the ball is about 2.5 meters and the pedestal is about 8 meters.
Its pedestal is essentially unique, since it is faced not with thin granite slabs, but with monolithic granite blocks, which makes it more massive. The project of the monument was selected among a dozen works of authorship from different cities of Russia, Ukraine and the USA. The monument had to be mounted right at the installation site, since the figure during transportation could be damaged. In this regard, the sculptors led the process of welding parts of the figure and the monument for several days, the lightest part of which weighs about 80 kilograms; after installation, the image of the woman underwent decorative decoration, which will allow for a long time to protect the monument from the influence of weather conditions. Luminaires made in the form of leaflets are also unique, because they were developed specifically for this monument. On the pedestal is a list of patrons who financed the creation and installation of the monument.
