The street appeared as a road to the city of Moscow, so it had the name Moscow Street. Over time, the street began to be called Staromoskovskaya, later - Korsikovskaya, 1st May Street, Stalin Avenue and Chuguevsky Highway. At first, the street reached only the Kharkov river, beyond which there was a fortification from attacks on the Kharkov fortress.
This part was built up in the XVII-XVIII centuries, later the street was lengthened due to the Zakharkov settlements, it went beyond the city limits and led to the farms. At this time, it, located in the low part of the city, in rainy weather became difficult for the movement of vehicles and residents. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the street was built up with wooden houses, and the authorities took seriously its expansion in 1837, when a road of cobblestones and stone sidewalks appeared here for the first time in Kharkov. In 1882, the Plant of Agricultural Machines and Tools was opened here. At the beginning of the twentieth century, several significant stone structures were erected on Moskovsky Prospekt - the Kharkov People's House, barracks, and the Kharkov Electromechanical Plant. In Soviet times, many large factories were located on it, which gave its name the “alley of giants”. The Soviet government tried to turn Moskovsky Prospekt into the central industrial street of the city, so significant funds were allocated for its arrangement.
This street will be interesting to any person, first of all - as saturated with industrial attractions. You can see the buildings of the Hammer and Sickle Motor-Building Plant (No. 183), the Kharkov Bicycle Plant (No. 118), the Kharkov Electromechanical Plant and the Turboatom Plant (No. 199), the Electrotyazhmash Plant (No. 199), and the Press House (No. 247) on it. ), Kharkov Tractor Plant (No. 275), Kharkov Tile Plant (No. 297). Also on the avenue is a number of research institutes - the Institute of Plant Growing, the Institute for the Design of Heavy Machine Building Plants, and mobile equipment.
