In the Garden of them. TG Shevchenko is another unusual monument, which has no analogues in the world, because it is closely connected with the tragic history of the Soviet past of the city. In the mid 30's in the Kharkov Soviet authorities were repressed (killed, deported) More than 300 people of creative professions - kobza and lyre players. However, the pressure and the physical destruction of art lasted several decades, so the memorial sign is not limited to binding to the memories of the events of the 30s.

A memorial to the repressed kobzars, bandurists and lyre was established in the late 90's. XX century. The opening took place on October 14, 1997, on the feast of the Protection of the Virgin, considered the patroness of these artists, in honor of the 120th anniversary of the famous bandura player Gnat Khotkevich and on the occasion of the 95th anniversary of his historic performance at the congress of folk musicians.
It is believed that in the Kharkiv region, after the Congress of Folk Singers in 1930, which took place in the building of the current KhNATOB, almost three hundred musicians were shot. Canadian historian Sergei Yekelchik does not confirm the information about the mass execution at that time, although he does not deny that this event as a whole reflects the Stalinist policy in the field of folk art. However, there are memories of Kharkov citizens confirming the presence of repressions by the authorities. Some of our contemporaries claim that their relatives, born at the beginning of the twentieth century, told in family meetings in a whisper the story of the murder of people performing thoughts to the accompaniment of Ukrainian folk instruments - kobza, bandura and lyre. Written memories of these events are in two scientific works: the white emigrant Shostakovich, published in London in 1939, and The Harvest of Sorrow by American American Robert Conquest. The authors of the memorial are Valery Bondar, Vasily Semenyuk, Alexey Shaulis and architect Alexei Morus. A granite monolith with a distorted kobz and the inscription “In memory of repressed kobzars” combines the features of symbolism and postmodernism.
