Work on the project of the monument started 6 years before its opening, because the competition for the project was announced in 2004.. More than a dozen works (not only the residents of Kharkiv) took part in the anonymous competition. While the jury supported two projects.
The first place was taken by the idea of completing the amphitheater of the Kharkiv National Opera and Ballet Theater named after M.V. Lysenko and installing a pool with a black ball on top. The second place went to the project of the surface of the globe, on which it was supposed to place a map of Kharkov. At that time, no funding was found to establish the monument, but it was the second project that became the prototype of the current sign. The monument was opened on October 10, 2010. The opening was attended by citizens and acting Mayor of the city - G.A. Kernes. This monument is interesting because it is underfoot (among the pavers on the ground), so it is not always seen by pedestrians. A path made of pavers with a repeating inscription “50th parallel” on bronze and copper tablets leads to the memorial sign. In the center of the track, the surface of the globe is established indicating the largest cities in the world and their remoteness from Kharkov. Scientists, however, note that initially the distance between the North Pole and Kharkov was indicated by an error of 500 km. Already in 2011, this mistake was corrected - the numbers indicated were simply cut out. The composition of the monument consists of 20 copper and bronze tablets with the inscription “50th parallel”, a convex bronze circle, a repeating inscription of the name of the city (Kharkov) along its perimeter in two languages - Russian and English.
