Walking along the street. Sumy, you probably have come across this huge historic building in yellow tones more than once. But until the moment you became the way you see it now, the theater managed to live several lives.
First life
He was first born into the world in the 18th century. The reason was the then governor, who built it for the arrival of Catherine II. At first it was just a big hall. After the empress left, they decided to expand him to the theater. The repertoire included comedies, musical numbers and monologues. The theater did not open its doors often - only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He didn’t live too long. As Catherine II ceased to exist, so he ceased.
Second Life
But it wasn’t there, in principle. In the courtyard of the XIX century. At the intersection of Theater Square and Pushkinskaya Street, they decided to build a new theater premises. In terms of architecture - it was a wooden hut. They say that the conditions were not the best: there was no heating and lighting devices replaced greasy plates. But this did not hinder to play performances in it, which, by the way, were known outside the city.
Third life
What happened to the “wooden hut” further is unknown. It is only known that this was only an intermediate stage. But the third life of the theater is the last and final.
In 1841, at the notorious Sumska 9, they decided to build the first stone theater in the city, designed by the then famous architect Andrei Ton. This time, the conditions were different: the building was lit with kerosene lamps, and the hall had as many as three tiers. The construction happened thanks to the means of the actor and director Ludwig Mlotkovsky. True, he could not pay his debts for the building and he left for the city of Oryol. Then the theater was bought by his daughter. And when the XIX century came to an end - the theater became the property of the city.
In 1883, the building was reconstructed. The architect Boleslav Mikhailovsky gave the facade the features of the French Renaissance, which was widespread at that time in style. And from that moment on, his appearance did not change. In contrast to the internal, which was rebuilt more than once.
