In the early nineteenth century on the area of City Hall Drama Theatre was opened. More in the second half of the XVIII century, it passed the city limits, ending shaft and a moat, kotorіe warned against enemy attacks.
In 1816, a wooden theater was erected at the site of the current Institute for Advanced Teachers of Teachers according to the project of Kalinovsky and Stein, and it was about him that the writer Grigory Kvitka-Osnovyanenko left his memories. The theater was quite large, had three tiers, but there were no heating stoves in it, so in the cold season, spectators were forced to sit in outer clothing, and the voices of the artists often broke right during the performance. The hall was lit with tallow candles. In 1841, according to the project of Yu.A. Ton, in another part of the square (on Sumskaya Street), the construction of a stone theater building began, which now bears the name of the T.G.Shevchenko Kharkov State Academic Theater. The new building was able to accommodate more than a thousand spectators, had heating and was lit using kerosene lamps. The grand opening of the new building took place in 1842. In 1899, to the centenary of the poet’s birth, a monument to A.S. Pushkin was erected on Theater Square. In 1909, a bust of N.V. Gogol was installed on the opposite side of the square. Already at that time, a square appeared on the square, in the 90s of the twentieth century surrounded by a forged fence. Now the square has bright lighting, a dozen shops and is such a popular vacation spot for Kharkiv residents that in the warm season it is difficult to find a free spot there.
