This area - one of the smallest, but the most famous, it is named after one of the types of verbal art - the area of poetry. In the second half of the XVIII century, this area was a peculiar feature of the city, after it was located the ditch, and then - the shaft to form the protection of the Kharkiv fortress and its inhabitants from attack by the north-west.

This territory is in close contact with another small territory - the Theater Square. The square of Poetry has an unusual trapezoidal shape, since it was formed spontaneously, due to the demolition of a fortification.
At the end of the 18th century, one of the first, therefore, the most famous, grocery stores was erected on the square. Already at the beginning of the 19th century, trading activity was expanded, the square became a traditional place for selling firewood, therefore it received an unofficial name - Wood Square.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the first theater in Kharkiv was erected nearby. Grigory Kvitka-Osnovyanenko writes about the functioning of the theater in his memoirs. He mentions that the orchestra at the theater was the best among the neighboring provinces, and the troupe consisted of 40 actors and 20 masters of ballet art. In the middle of the XIX century the building of a new stone building of the theater was erected on the Sumskaya street, and the old, wooden, burned down in a fire. The new theater could accommodate over a thousand people. Here such luminaries of the Ukrainian theater as Sadovsky, Saksagansky, Kropivnitsky and Zankovetskaya performed. Sara Bernard, Eleonora Duse and even the famous troupe of director Meyerhold came here from abroad.
The square of Poetry is turned to the sculpture of Alexander Pushkin, a famous Russian poet. Next to it is Pushkinskaya Street, perhaps precisely because the square somehow connects the bust of Alexander Sergeyevich and the street named in his honor, the square got its present name.
