The first records about the Cathedral date from the distant 1655. Then in the poor and nobody needed Kharkov, he was a one-table wooden temple, surrounded by a backdrop, but already at that time was not bad in the local landscape.
Later, with the arrival of a new era, the city was chosen by wealthy merchants and petty bourgeoises, large sums were donated for the construction of a new stone church. And already in 1794 it was lighted, after which next to it was built a new temple, such as we know it now.
The decision to build a new cathedral was made in 1887, a year later the first stone was laid. Construction was going on with an incredible pace for that time, and in 1901 on the bank of Lopani was a majestic and unique Annunciation church.
The main highlight of the beautiful architectural masterpiece was the 80-meter four-tier bell tower. On July 3, 1914, the temple was officially recognized as the “City Cathedral”. After 16 years, the cathedral was closed by a decision of the secretariat of V (U) CEC. Only during the war years, the administration allowed to conduct services in the Temple weekly.
After the war in 1946, the temple became the cathedral of the diocesan center, which remains to this day. For all the time, many troubles happened with the Annunciation Cathedral, the most famous of which were: a thunder storm, which brought down the cast-iron cross of the bell tower in 1974, and a strong hurricane in 1993, which bent the previously restored cross.
But the biggest disaster happened in 1997, when during welding the cross and the upper part of the dome were destroyed. On May 7, 2011, the Annunciation Cathedral was visited by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill. This was the first ever official visit of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church to Kharkov.
