In the historical center of Kharkov is the Cathedral, the central chapel which was consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, since 1846 became the bishop's department. It is the oldest temple of the city, as there was in the time of the first settlements of the Cossacks, the formation of the Kharkiv fortress in the middle of the XVII century. However, better known among Kharkiv is the face of the Alexander bell tower of the Cathedral, which appeared much later, the temple itself.

It was the Assumption Church that became the first wooden church in Kharkov. Traditionally, military settlements were formed around the square near the temple, where military councils were held - “glad,” so it was the center of settlements until the end of the 17th century. The first written memory of the construction of the temple is found in the report of governor Ofrosimov in 1658, which mentions that the church was built of red wood. Its area was 70 square meters. It is known that at first there were not even wooden icons in the temple, paper ones were used instead. Around the building was a cemetery surrounded by a fence. The first stone temple was built and consecrated by Metropolitan Abramius in 1688. In 1733, a severe fire occurred in the city, because of it the architectural structure was damaged to such an extent that it could not be reconstructed. The modern construction of the stone temple was begun in 1771 and completed by 1777, it was financed by the local clergy and residents of the city.
It is interesting that the prototype of the temple was the project of the largest in the Zamoskvorechye church of Clement of the Pope, erected in 1762-1770: it also had a five-domed shape and five thrones. The city assembly at the beginning of the 19th century decided that a bell tower should be built at the temple, which was built in 1818-1819. The status of the cathedral was received in 1846. After some time, a chapel consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas was attached to the bell tower. In 1889, the Tsar Bell, weighing 300 kilograms, was installed on the bell tower. The height of the bell tower of the cathedral is 89.5 meters. The legend says that once it was even higher, but several floors of the bell tower were demolished, because the authorities did not like the fact that the church was the tallest building in the city. In 1924, the first radio communication antenna was installed on the bell tower, and already in 1929 all five domes were demolished. The restoration of the cathedral was carried out in the 50s and 70s of the twentieth century. An organ was installed in the Cathedral in 1984, and since 1990, for the first time since the Soviet prohibitions, divine services were resumed by the priests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. The temple is made in the Baroque architectural style, and the bell tower is in the classical style.
