The stone building of the Pokrovsky Cathedral was built by the Cossacks outside the borders of the Kharkov fortress, near its northern wall, in 1689 instead of the wooden Pokrovsky church (known since 1659).

In 1726, at the initiative of the Bishop of Belgorod, Epiphanius of Tikhorsky and the Governor-General of Sloboda Ukraine, Prince M. M. Golitsyn, the Holy Pokrovsky College for Men was established with the Kharkov College, the first institution of higher education on the Left Bank.

Since 1729, the Intercession Church became a monastery and collegiate church. The temple was repaired, decorated and provided with church utensils.

In the eastern altar window was the emblem of the Empire, and in the lower half of the glass were metal letters: B. M. E. T. E. B.
