The area is located on the left bank of the river Lopan at the University hill. A large part of it relates to the Shevchenko district of the city, a small south - to Osnovyanskomu. It is bounded on the north Sobor descent from the South-east - Pavlovskaya area. From the northern side of the square goes Klochkovsky street from the west begins one of the oldest streets in the city - Poltava Way. The southern part of the area gives rise to Bannomu alley that leads to the fishing area.
The construction of the square began in the middle of the 18th century, when the first stone houses continued to be built in Kharkov. Then it was called Bazarnaya, because along the river Lopan, near which the square is located, there were wooden benches and many small catering establishments. Many shops were destroyed in a large fire in 1835, which was caused by the ignition of the oil plant. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Sergiev row was erected, which was named after the then governor. At that time, the square was named Sergievskaya. Later the Novo-Sergievsky row was erected here, the second floor of which was decided to be made separately for the newly created city museum. In Soviet times, the museum received the name of the Museum of Slobozhansky Ukraine named after GS Skovoroda. At the end of the twentieth century, the Novo-Sergievsky series also burned down, so the Nikolayevsky site was built in its place according to the design of architect AK Spiegel. In 1898, projects of small houses by architect Alexei Beketov were implemented near the square. During World War II, some of the structures were destroyed, and the square was expanded at the site of the rubble. Pavlovskaya Square was named in honor of the 15th anniversary of the October Revolution.
