The street appeared in the 30's. XIX century and was known as the alley Goryainovskogo as merchant Goryainova homestead was located there. In 1936, Lane began to carry the name of Dragomanov, until 1937 also had the name of Bauman street. Later Lane has been renamed in Ufa (in honor of the city of Ufa in the Russian Federation). By the 200th anniversary of the birth of hryhory kvitka (1978) got its present name.
At the same time, the only monument to the writer in the city was created on the street, created by the sculptor Semyon Yakubovich and the architect Yuri Shkodovsky. In 1939, a central registry office was temporarily located in this lane. In Soviet times, an alternative to the fair stalls was built here - the “New Passage”, which currently houses the Detsky Mir. Opposite the building technical school there is a well-known second-hand bookstore, which is constantly updated with rare editions, therefore it is quite popular among Kharkiv citizens. In 1830, the Goryainovsky Gate was erected at the beginning of the street; their design was developed by S.G. Chernyshov. They existed until 1916, when the builders of the apartment building of the Rossiya insurance company were forced to take them apart. Some Kharkovites mistakenly call them Triumphal, but, according to historians, the analogue of the Parisian triumphal arch was located on Poltava Shlyakh Street.
